The third and final volume in this popular series of obscure 60?s and 70?s pop from Thailand begins with blazing horns, throbbing basslines, dropping necklines, and rising hemlines on Jiraphand Ong-Ards "Thai Boxing", illustrating that the funky disco hybrid had finally reached the shores of Thailand (the original Thai-language version, "Siamese Boxing" closes the set).
As on previous volumes, the element of jaw-dropping, kitschy surprise meets bland, rudimentory readings of eminently forgettable pap that's included more for it's scarcity than any inherent musical quality.
But overall, the compilation is full of such unearthed goldmines.
Oriental Funk's burping keyboard instrumental "Come Together" (thankfully, not the Lennon track) sounds like they could be Thailand's answer to K.C. & The Sunshine Band.
And how many remember Manu Dibangos 1972 African pop smash, "Soul Makossa"? Well, marry that to Hayes' "Shaft" soundtrack and you're close to Don's "Soul Dracula", although here Don's male vocalist sounds curiously like Kim Fowley singing in in Thai!
If Thailand didn't have the Bay City Rollers, they'd probably have to invent them and they would sound something like Panatda's "Let's Go!", complete with that catchy count-off that even The Ramones appropriated and either the wackiest keyboard or meanest kazoo I've ever heard. The same band's percussive freakout, "Flash Disco" sounds like the Thai wedding reception equivalent of Kool & The Gang's "Celebrate". I can see the trains forming now on the dancefloor, and that oom-pah polka backing is sheer genius with a Mai-Thai! Happy feets, don't fail me now, for Chanta's "Changwah Disco" is up next and I can't sit down. Altogether, now: "Sigh, sigh,sigh, sigh, sigh, sigh, sigh"
Finally, The Law & The Sandy has neither lawyers nor Sandys, but their headswirling "Paradise in Bangkok" comes on like a polka band playing surf music and perfectly encapsulates the albums subtitle: "Groovy Sounds from The Land of Smile!"
A fitting finale to this set and series.
